Concept Art - Flora Hwang
I created Flora back in 2006. She was inspired by an extremely minor character from Prince of Tennis. You can guess from her old fuzzy, dark hairstyle, which of the boys she was based off of. The original Flora was supposed to be Chinese, but when I decided she would be a game character, I changed her surname from Huang to Hwang. Flora was always intended to be an obstacle character in Marie's story, but she actually was supposed to be a pushy girl in Marie's class that always tried to force her friendship on her.

During a speed sketch, drawing the new curly design from memory, I accidentally drew Flora's hair completely wrong, but I liked it so much better, so it stuck as her permanent official hairstyle. On the other hand, I always had trouble nailing her official eye design, so she went through a couple of them.

These designs were drawn after the storyline was decided to take place in an MMORPG. Flora was always intended to be a sporty girl, but it took some extra designing to make her a trendy and sporty girl. I had trouble picking out her official color scheme.
When I began, I was worried there would be no difference in personality between Ivy and Flora, but once I got them together, Flora's personality dominated hers. I blame Flora as the reason why Ivy became so passive.
I don't remember at what point in the storyline I wanted to make alternate costumes for the characters, but I found myself plotting out these Magic Item Transformations and working them into the plot.
This is The Phoenix's Child (Female Ver.) It was inspired by whimsical Korean video game fashion, which often is a parody of Korean cultural fashion. Flora maintains certain specifics to her default character design, such as her flouncy, sheer sleeves. Phoenix motifs are not as common in fashion as peacock motifs are, so I had to search for peacock inspired outfits and jewelry to design Flora's costume. I didn't mean to make Flora's wing hairclips look like ears- that was a mistake. |
